Rubio: Bring Pro-Growth Conservative Reforms to Puerto Rico

In a recent column published in Florida Today, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) addresses the fiscal crisis in Puerto Rico and how to address it in the short- and long terms. Rubio cites the Puerto Rico Oversight Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) as “an appropriate first step by Congress to deal with this calamity.”

Rubio cautions, however, that PROMESA alone is not a cure-all for Puerto Rico’s fiscal crisis. Instead, Rubio discusses the need for a long-term approach:

San Juan’s politicians must get their act together and adopt pro-growth economic reforms like the ones I’ve outlined in the past. An impactful conservative reform agenda for Puerto Rico would reform the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); implement pro-growth, pro-family tax reform that creates more jobs, boosts wages, and doubles the Child Tax Credit for every child…

Implementing these conservative reforms would not only bring Puerto Rico’s fiscal house in order but also bolster the island’s economic growth and create greater opportunities for its residents.

On a larger scale, the United States would undoubtedly benefit from the implementation of similar pro-growth, pro-family conservative reforms. Such policies would grow our economy, jobs, and the wages of America’s working families.

Bring conservative reforms to Puerto Rico, but let’s not limit the fruits of these policies to the island’s shores. Let’s also deliver them to the American people.
